Perhaps the biggest environmental challenge for ironmaking processes into the twenty-first century involves responding to the concerns about global warming. Ironmaking processes require the use of carbon-based reductants, and ultimately result in the emission of carbon dioxide.

Over the last centuries, climate change has been raised as a very important issue all over the world. The change in climate results from an increase in the earth s average atmospheric temperature, which is usually referred to as global warming. It may be due to both natural and human causes, especially greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 

In 2005 the floating ice cap on the Arctic Ocean was at its smallest size in a century of recording keeping. This development was explained by global warming and a likely rise in ocean temperatures.

Tt is conventional to include perfluorocarbons (fluorous phases) in this Ust. However, these have extremely high global warming potentials they are from 140-23,900 times more potent than CO2 in their abilities to trap heat in the atmosphere over a century. Moreover, they remain in the atmosphere almost indefinitely, and so will accumulate as long as they are used on a significant scale. We do not consider their use as a green option.
