Release of 5-Fluorouracil. 5-Fluorouradl (5-FU) is a well known antineoplastic agent that finds applications in cancer chemotherapy [40] and in the prevention of fibroblast proliferation following glaucoma filtration surgery [14]. 

Release of 5-fluorouraciL The release of 5-fluorouracil from the ointment-like material is currently under investigation as an adjunct for glaucoma filtration surgery. A preliminary study showing release of 5FU for about one week from an acetate polymer containing 2.5 wt% Mg(OH)2 is shown in Fig. 35 [55]. As with the ganciclovir study described under 4.3.4, suitable formulation and polymer selection should produce devices that release 5FU for the desired length of time. 

Heparin may prevent postoperative fibrin formation in eyes undergoing surgery for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, proliferative vitreoretino-pathy, and glaucoma filtration surgery.
