The other preferred form of closure system in pharmacy is heat-sealing. This usually achieves an effective and permanent seal, which can only be opened by destruction of part of the packaging material. An example is the glass ampoule, fused by heat. The fused glass forms a totally hermetic seal. Another example is the blister packaging of tablets. A multilayered film of polymer material is preformed and filled with tablets, and sealed by heat and pressure to a thin aluminium strip foil.

Because of poor therm oform ability, there are relatively few apphcations for polypropylene sheet. New soHd-phase pressure forming (SPPE) techniques are under development for forming PP sheet. Polypropylene is used in coextmded sheet to some extent for food packaging containers. Glass-filled, wood-filled, or other modified polypropylene sheet materials are used in limited automotive apphcations. 

Textile fibers can be air-formed ditectiy into end use configuration by including a shaped condensing surface or, as in the production of pillows, an air-permeable collection package. Aerodynamic web formation is a suitable means for processing brittie fibers such as glasses and ceramics, and stiff fibers such as metaUics and wood. 

It is quite rare that the composition or the packaging of an ophthalmic pharmaceutical will lend itself to terminal sterilization, the simplest form of manufacture of sterile products. Only a few ophthalmic drugs formulated in simple aqueous vehicles are stable to normal autoclaving temperatures and times (121°C for 20-30 min).
