Geological structures

Appraisal wells, drilled at the exploration stage within structures or other traps with an observed oil and gas content for the purpose of studying the geological structure of the deposit and the quality of the mineral to the extent necessary to permit confirmation of oil and natural gas reserves in categories which will serve as a basis for investment decisions, as well as obtaining data required for developing and exploiting the deposit.

The Yamizo Mountains are mostly occupied by Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, mainly of Jurassic age (e.g., Sashida et al., 1982) with a small amount of intrusive granitoids of unknown ages. The Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks have been called the Yamizo Formation (Kanomata, 1961). It is composed chiefly of shale, sandstone, alternating beds of shale and sandstone, and a small amount of limestone and chert. The succession of the geologic units and geologic structure of the Yamizo Formation have been left pending due to complex structure such as upturned beds (Kasai, 1978) and submarine land sliding (Aono et al., 1985).

Recently, 27 back-arc deposits have been discovered in the Western Pacific (Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995) (Fig. 2.29). The summary of geologic structure, type of deposits and mineralogy of the back-arc deposits in Western Pacific are given in Table 2.12 (Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995).

The relative development of the infrastructure to transport C02 is still in its early stages. This is reflected by the low number of existing infrastructures developed to transport C02 from stationary sources into geological structures. Table 1 provides an overview of the current developments for C02 transportation globally. /Ml of these examples have been developed in relation to the EOR technique, where the C02 source is found mainly in natural reserves. In Europe, only a few projects are in operation, but there are plans to deploy an extended C02 pipeline network along Europe to optimise C02 storage structures. 

At present, there are three possible geological structures that may be considered for C02 storage depleted hydrocarbon and production, deep saline aquifers, and coal seams. 

Geophysics survey will provide and describe geological structures, and in some cases hydrogeology parameter (i.e., total dissolved solid, TDS). 

Geological structure is complicated due to numerous faults and foldings. 

These workers did not respond to market demands, but rather were motivated by the desire to account for the origins, differentiation, and alteration of rocks — questions that were of considerable importance to the history of geological structures and the classification of rocks, but which could hardly be claimed as problems of economic geology. The applications that later arose and contributed toward creating a market for geochemists skills were largely, if not wholly, unanticipated (56).

SERF is not appropriate for treatment in nonpermeable or low permeability strata such as rock or thick clay layers. Fractured rock formations and geological structures with high permeability tunnels within them would cause preferential steam flow and would not allow most areas of soil to be appropriately treated by the technology. 

Thus gas, if any is present, is found in the highest parts of the trap, followed by oil (and oil with gas) below the gas, and finally salt water below the oil. Experience has indicated that the salt water seldom was completely displaced by oil or gas from the pore spaces, even w ithin the trap. Even in the midst of oil and gas accumulation, pore spaces within the trap may contain from 10 to 50% or more of salt water, It appears that the remaining water (termed connate water) fills the smaller pores ancl also exists as a coating or film, covering the rock surfaces of the larger pore spaces thus oil and/or gas are apparently contained in water-jacketed pore spaces. The geological structures called traps are petroleum reservoirs, i.e.. they are the oil and gas fields that me explored and produced. All oil fields contain some gas, but the quantity may range widely. See also Natural Gas. 

Structural Traps. The attitude of the rocks, whether they are folded, fractured, displaced, or otherwise disturbed, is called their geologic structure. Traps that are due to geologic structure tire known as structural traps.
