In this book, the classification of ostracods by Muller is used the genus names by the Poulsen classification are cited in parentheses only when appropriate. The author protests against the irresponsible shuffling of scientific names, and hopes for the revival of the Muller classification. In addition, the author believes that Cypridina luciferin is the proper name of this substance that is not necessarily bound to the genus name. 

Virus genera are designated by terms ending in - virus. Thus, among the Poxviridae those poxviruses which infect fowl are called by the genus name Avipoxvirus. Note that frequently in the animal viruses, the genus is defined based on the host which the virus infects. 

Genus names, as formal names, should be capitalized and italicized. Species should not be capitalized, but they should be italicized. Genus names are spelled out in full at first mention and abbreviated thereafter. 

In botanical nomenclature, the name of a plant consists of its genus name (first letter in upper case) and specific name (all lower case letters), both italicized the author citation (abbreviation of the name of the botanist who first described the plant) and within parentheses, the name of the family to which it belongs. 

There is little information in the literature about medicinal uses of S. divinorum, but there are many instances throughout the world where other Salvia species are used medicinally (1, 11, 14, 18). In fact, the genus name Salvia itself comes from the Latin word salvare, which means "to save." Customarily, the natives talk about dosages of S divinorum in pairs of leaves (1). Infusions of the plant are most commonly used (1,3), but it has also been used in water as a poultice (3) and sometimes the patient is bathed in the infusion (3).

The second word in the name of a microorganism is the species name and is not capitalized. There may be several species with the same genus name, for example, Bacillus subtilis, B. albus, and B. coagulans. Note that when the same genus name is repeated several times, it is abbreviated... 

Nomenclature Restriction enzymes are isolated from bacteria, where they play a role in protecting the host cell against virus infection. Over 100 restriction enzymes have now been isolated and have been named according to the bacterial species from which they were isolated. The first three letters of the enzyme name are the first letter of the genus name and the first two letters of the species name. Since each bacterium may contain several different restriction enzymes, a roman numeral is also used to identify each enzyme. EcoRI, for example, was the first enzyme isolated from Escherichia cgli.

Further analysis of the UV spectrum revealed that this compound is a gallic acid derivative. A search of the Dictionary of Natural Products for molecular ion and plant genus name leads to the identification of a known compound - Pterocaryanin B. The compounds with poly-hydroxyl groups in their structures are very well known as tyrosinase inhibitors and are responsible for the inhibition of melanin synthesis. Therefore, no further isolation was necessary. 

Do not capitalize genus names used as common nouns except at the beginning of a sentence or in a title or heading. 

Always capitalize genus names, but never capitalize species names, in titles and headings. 

For genus and species names, spell out the full genus name in the title, in the abstract, and the first time it appears in text. Abbreviate it thereafter with the same species name, but spell it out again with each different species name. Form the abbreviation with the initial of the genus name. If the paper contains more than one genus name that starts with the same initial letter, devise abbreviations that distinguish them. Use italic type for all names and abbreviations.

In order to plan a rotation, you need some working knowledge of how botanical names of plants indicate relationships. All plants have a two-part botanical name, consisting of a genus name and a species name. For example, the botanical name of cucumber is Ciicumis sativus. Cucumis is the genus name, sativus is the specific epithet. Together these make up the species name, Cucumis sativus.
