Small subunit rRNA gene sequences have been determined for a large number of nematode taxa distributed across the phylum (Ellis et al., 1986 Zarlenga et al, 1994a,b Fitch et al., 1995 Fitch and Thomas, 1997 Aleshin et al, 1998 Blaxter et al., 1998 Kampfer et al, 1998 Dorris et al., 1999). Studies in the last few years in the fields of genomics and proteomics have made available to us an unprecedented number of targets with which to search for new drug candidates. While knowledge of a particular gene sequence, for example, may not directly point to a specific disease when the sequences are first determined, investigations of their presence in normal and diseased tissues could well lead to a quantitative in vitro test system that is not available today. The same can be said for the field of proteomics, but final decisions on the value of these new technologies cannot be made for some years to come.

Because the sequencing of DNA has become so straightforward, genes of several ribosomal proteins have been sequenced to allow an independent determination of the primary sequence of some of the proteins (Post et ai, 1979 Olins and Nomura, 1981). These studies have confirmed the sequences previously elucidated by protein chemical techniques. In the case of SI (the largest of all E. coli proteins), the combination of amino acid- and nucleotide-sequence determinations was used to provide the sequence (Schnier et ai, 1982). 

Many bioinformatics programs exist that provide information to allow determining if the candidate SNP may interfere with a potential functional site (see Table 12.1). Polymorphism Mining and Annotation Programs (PolyMAPr) (21) provides this information in a particularly efficient way once a file containing the annotated gene sequence has been entered. The successful expression of recombinant plant peroxidases such as HRP C has been a major focus of research in a number of laboratories.
