The familiar diamond structure, with each atom covalently bonded in a perfect tetrahedral fashion to its four neighbors, is adopted not only by C but also by Si and Ge. Silicon can also adopt a wurtzite structure (see below), an example of a polytype (one of several crystal structures possible for a substance having an identical chemical composition but differing in the stacking of layers, and which may exist in a metastable state after its formation at some different temperature or pressure). 

Materials. The 1-propanol, glycerol and anthracene were obtained from Aldrich Chemical Company and were used as received. As in a previous study,17 a commercially available bis-(4-dodecylphenyl) iodonium hexafluoroantimonate salt (UV9310C GE Silicones) was used as the initiator. In this initiator, various dodecyl isomers have been attached to the phenyl rings of the diphenyliodonium salt to impart solubility in the monomer and do not effect the reactivity of the initiator.1 All studies were performed with an order of magnitude excess of initiator relative to anthracene. 

Many substances can serve as the stationary phase for gas chromatographic separations of methyl esters in most cases polyester, polyether, or silicone greases are used. Percival (18) has investigated the composition of polyesters by methanolysis with sodium methyl oxide. The dimethyl esters of the dicarboxylic acids present in the composition and free glycols are formed and subsequently are separated at temperatures between 110° and 180° C. on a column of GE silicone SF-96 and Fluoropak 80. It should be possible to adapt this method to the analysis of polyesters used as plasticizers.

The late Alan Ritzer of GE wrote of the opportunities that environmental regulations present to silicone manufactures118. A major strategy of GE Silicones continues to be avoidance of landfilling and incineration and returning key materials back into commerce. Said Ritzer, Additional opportunities remain as overall silicon utilization still can be further improved . Residue cleavage represents one method to create more Di and Tri. Mono and Tri redistribution (equation 8) represents yet another method to improve Di yield.

It was reported by Katayama el al. that a thin Si layer can be electrodeposited in l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorosilicate at 90 °C [44], However, upon exposure to air the deposit reacted completely to SiC>2, which makes it difficult to decide whether the deposit was semiconducting or not.
