Gaskets advantages

The fluoroelastomers possess good mbber properties with the added advantages of being nonburning, hydrophobic, and solvent- and fuel-resistant. In addition to these, because of flexibiHty down to about —60° C, these polymers have been used in seals, gaskets, and hoses in army tanks, in aviation fuel lines and tanks, as well as in cold-climate oil pipeline appHcations. These polymers have also found appHcation in various types of shock mounts for vibration dampening (14,17). 

Both faces of each plate are hollowed to form a chamber for cake accumulation between adjacent plates. This design has the advantage of about half as many joints as a plate-and-frame press, making a tight closure more certain. Figure 18-114 shows some of the features of one type of recessed-plate filter which has a gasket to further minimize leaks. Air can be introduced behind the moth on both sides of each plate to assist cake removal.

Another method to determine current distribution in a PEM fuel cell was presented by Sun et al.169 in which they designed a current distribution measurement gasket that can be placed anywhere in the fuel cell (usually at the back of the cathode side) and can measure the local current density at various point along the active area of the cell. The advantage of this approach is that it can be used without having to modify any component of the cell. The same technique was also used by Zhang et al.170 to compare the performance of interdigitated and serpentine flow fields.
