Energy consumption Energy consumptions are 3,300 kcal/kg of ethylene produced for ethane cracking and 5,000 kcal/kg of ethylene for naphtha feedstocks. Energy consumption can be as low as 4,000 kcal/kg of ethylene for naphtha feedstocks with gas turbine integration. 

The MCFC is suitable for integration with gas turbines, and Japanese studies of this topic are extensive. But there are no prototypes as for the SOFC (Siemens Westinghouse). Two figures taken from Chapters 4 and 5 are reproduced below for the reader s convenience. The first figure (Figure 1.2) is the Siemens Westinghouse SOFC/gas turbine integration scheme. 

The second Figure (Figure 1.3) shows the author s thinking on MCFC/gas turbine Integration.

Siemens Westinghouse is advanced in its pursuit of gas turbine integration. High-temperature depleted air and unused fuel from the fuel cell cannot be discarded, and are best used in a gas turbine, as outlined in Baozhen Li etal. (2001), the Siemens patent for a Single Module Pressurised Fuel Cell Turbine Generator System (pp. 974-979). The effect... 

The main aim of Rolls-Royce, shared with Siemens Westinghouse (George etah, 2001), is fuel cell/gas turbine integration in large-capacity pressurised units. In the longer term, combined electricity and synthesis-gas production can be supported. 

Allied Signal had a gas turbine integration scheme, in which the gas turbine coped with peak demands without disturbing the output of the fuel cells, and avoiding thermal stress. The intentions for the future of Honeywell are unclear. 

For Figure A.5, which is in no sense a hydrogen mine but a pure power plant of very high productivity, the gas-turbine-integrated IT/SOFC is additionally attractive because it accommodates any of the special techniques for methane oxidation (Perry Murray etal., 1999 Park etal., 1999 Gorte etal., 2000).
