Some acids are conveniently made by a combination of isolation and synthesis. For example, dihomogammalinolenic acid (20 3 n—6) is best obtained from gammalinolenic acid (18 3 n—6), itself isolated from evening primrose oil, by chain extension by two carbon atoms (malonation).
