Gamma rays characteristics

The radioactive isotope of 13AI has a characteristic decay process that includes the release of a beta particle and a gamma ray. [Pg.645]

Low-LET—Energy transfer characteristic of light charged particles such as electrons produced by x and gamma rays where the distance between ionizing events is large on the scale of a cellular nucleus. [Pg.279]

Mossbauer spectroscopy is an analytical technique that, in archaeological ceramic studies, provides information on the condition and characteristics of the compounds of iron in pottery. Using the technique makes it possible to determine the relative amounts of the different (ferrous and ferric) ions of iron and hence to ascertain the firing conditions of the pottery at the time it was made. The technique involves irradiating a sample of pottery with gamma rays and then assessing the amount of radiation absorbed by the nuclei of the ions of iron within the pottery (Feathers et al. 1998 Bearat and Pradell 1997). [Pg.60]

Tossing a mental coin, the decision was to analyze the case of noise proportional to the square root of the signal. This, as you will recall, is Poisson-distributed noise, characteristic of the noise encountered when the limiting noise source is the shot noise that occurs when individual photons are detected and represent the ultimate sensitivity of the measurement. This is a situation that is fairly commonly encountered, since it occurs, as mentioned previously, in UV-Vis instrumentation as well as in X-ray and gamma-ray measurements. This noise source may also enter into readings made in mass spectrometers, if the detection method includes counting individual ions. We have, in... [Pg.285]

The number of lanthanide ions that can be studied simultaneously in the same aqueous solution is dependent on several considerations. Firstly, the extraction constants Ke of the lanthanides change by approximately 104 on transition from La3+ to Lu3+. It is thus difficult to provide a constant TTA concentration across the lanthanide series because of the inaccuracy of the D values. Secondly, the gamma ray spectra emitted by the tracers from each phase must contain one or more characteristic peaks which can be easily counted for a desired element. We must choose several lanthanide mixtures. [Pg.11]

Ionizing radiation is divided into alpha and beta particles and gamma rays. Each has its unique characteristics, which require different safety approaches. In general, the more radiation exposure a person receives, the greater the likelihood of cancer. [Pg.152]

Figure 28 Schematic presentation of the relative situation of the different types of radiations used in therapy. Two criteria are considered the physical selectivity and the LET (or radiobiological properties). For the low-LET radiations, the physical selectivity was improved from the historical 200-kV x-rays to cobalt-60 gamma rays and the modern linacs. Even with the linacs today, significant improvement is continuously achieved (IMRT, etc.). Among the low-LET radiation, the proton beams have the best physical characteristics, but one of the issues is the proportion of patients who will benefit from proton irradiation. A similar scale can be drawn for high-LET radiation the heavy-ion beams have a physical selectivity similar to protons. Selection between low- and high-LET radiation is a biological/medical problem it depends on the tumor characteristics, and reliable criteria still need to be established (see text). (From Ref 54.)... Another important characteristic is that ion beams can produce a variety of the secondary particles/photons such as secondary ions/atoms, electrons, positrons. X-rays, gamma rays, and so on, which enable us to use ion beams as analytical probes. Ion beam analyses are characterized by the respectively detected secondary species, such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS), electron spectroscopy, particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), nuclear reaction analyses (NRA), positron emission tomography (PET), and so on. [Pg.814]
