GABA-rich Chlorella

We examined the effects of GABA-rich Chlorella on blood pressure in SHR [49].

Experimental diets containing 10 % GABA-rich Chlorella was given to SHR for 15 weeks and the measurement of blood pressure was executed using the tail-cuff method in all instances.

GABA-rich Chlorella diet compared with those fed the basal diet (data not shown). 

Next, we examined the effects of GABA-rich Chlorella on blood pressure in mild hypertensive subjects [50]. Ten subjects (age, 48.8 3.5 years old body weight, 73.4 7.4 kg systolic blood pressure, 147.5 9.3 mmHg diastolic blood pressure, 88.3 4.7 mmHg) took 6 g of GABA-rich Chlorella per day for 8 weeks. 

GABA-rich Chlorella contains GABA, which shows a hypotensive effect associated with the blockade of sympathetic ganglia and hypotensive components such as nucleic acids and proteins in Chlorella cells. Therefore, GABA-rich Chlorella is expected to show a synergistic effect on SHRSP or hypertensive subjects. 

Secondly, we attempted to enrich the amounts of GABA in Chlorella cells. The glutamic acid-rich Chlorella cells produced 334 mg% of GABA in culture medium adjusted to pH 4.0 after 1 h-incubation at 38°C under anaerobic conditions.
