Fused deposition

The composite was used for fused deposition modelling (FDM). FDM is a filament based rapid prototyping system (80). The application of FDM demands that the material can be made in feedstock filament form. [Pg.235]

SFF encompasses many different approaches to additive fabrication, including Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Electron Beam Melting (EBM), Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and 3D Printing. [Pg.258]

Thermal conductivity of sintered and fused deposits found by the Australian researchers range from 0.5 x 10" kW/mK at 800 K to 2.0 X 10" kW/mK at 1500 K. This is consistent with the recent findings of Fetters et al. (3 ) for crushed deposits from a boiler fired with Indiana coal and with other literature values ( ). The increase of thermal conductivity of sintered and fused deposits is due to a decrease of void space and increased transmissivity of the material. Wall et al. emphasize that values of k obtained from ground deposits in laboratory studies are questionable since bounding of the deposit occurs in situ which leads to an increase of k. This agrees with our results for a 700 MW boiler which yielded an overall value of k - 3.2 x lO"" kW/mK for deposits which could not be removed by soot blowing (see below). [Pg.379]

In FDM the source material is a thermoplastic polymer filament that is heated and extruded to form the product as shown in Figure 23.14. The product is formed in a layer-by-layer manner similar to building up layers of icing on a cake. The computer controls the jc-y position of the filament and the deposition rate. The filament can be loaded with up to 60 vol% ceramic powders once the part is completed the binder is removed and the part is sintered. Most of the work in the RP of ceramic parts by FDM has involved Si3N4. The feasibility of making components out of AI2O3, SiOi, and PZT has also been demonstrated. The abbreviation FDC (fused deposition of ceramics) is used to identify this special application of FDM. [Pg.420]

The method is office-friendly and quiet. Fused deposition modeling is fairly fast for small parts (several cubic centimeters) or those that have tall, thin form-factors. [Pg.273]
