The MCR toward 2//-2-imidazolines (65) has found apphcation in the construction of A(-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes (74). Alkylation of the sp Af-atom with an alkyl halide followed by abstraction of the proton at C2 with a strong base (NaH, KOtBu) resulted in the formation of the free carbene species, which could be trapped and isolated as the corresponding metal complexes (Ir or Rh) [160]. The corresponding Ru-complexes were shown to be active and selective catalysts for the transfer hydrogenaticm of furfural to furfurol using iPrOH as hydrogen source [161]. 

A great many aldehydes can be employed—propaldehyde, nitrobenz-aldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, furfurol—so that the reaction is of wide application. For the steps in the conversion of the compounds obtained to alkyl or aryl derivatives of dimethylpyridine, see pp. 242, 411, 412.

Furfurol (1 part) is mixed with acetaldehyde (2 parts), water (100 parts), and 10 per cent, sodium hydroxide (5 parts). 

By gradually heating the mixture to 50°—60° a yellow oil first separates, passing to a brown solid, and when the latter appears, the liquid is neutralised with snlphuric acid. The liquid is next distilled, and the distillate (containing needle-crystals) is extracted with ether, the ethereal extract distilled, and when the temperature has reached 210° the residual oil is allowed to solidify. The brown needles of furfurol acrolein are recrystallised from boiling water. Pale yellow needles m.p. 51° yield, about 60 per cent, of furfurol used. 

Benzaldehyde, benzoin, cinnamic aldehyde, salicylic aldehyde, furfurol, and quinone, under the influence of the discharge, absorb nitrogen more or less rapidly. 

The NS 900 put into operation in 1970 was the very first vessel of designs 705 and 705K. In 1972 because of failure of NS primary circuit s auxiliary pipelines and impossibility of their repair, the NS was taken out of service after expiration of only 10% of fuel lifetime in the reactor. The RC was cut out of NS, and free cavities of the primary circuit were filled with preservative agents on furfurol basis. A bitumen-layer of about 1000 mm was laid over the whole surface of the upper deck of RC including the reactor upper head. Under such condition the RC is to be stored with nuclear fuel for long within the waterborne storage center. Some characteristics of NS, design 705, are demonstrated in Tables 3, 4 and 5.
