Full development safety aspects

One item that is important to note in the development of SANS 10294 is that it is not just a code but an overall philosophy that needs to be developed. It is not a system wherein the user can pick and choose which elements are employed—it is a single approach that requires ALL aspects to be employed in order for the full safety aspect to be realized. 

This section contains a few chemical investigations that may be conducted at home. They are not full experiments, but they should provide useful activities that could be developed into a full-fledged experiment. Each illustrates basic concepts explained in the previous chapters. Most involve a few simple steps, while a few are more complicated. Again, the most important aspects of these activities are to be safe, have fun, and learn. Before actually trying to do the activity, read and understand the activity. Assemble all materials before starting and do the activity in a safe place. If chemicals are stored, label and mark the contents properly. Pay close attention to safety and dispose of used chemicals and materials safely. 

A number of risk indices have been developed over the years as chemical process loss prevention and risk management tools. Many of these are based on the inherent characteristics of the processes, and they can be used as measures of process inherent safety. In general, these indices measure a single aspect of inherent safety, and it is necessary to use several indices to obtain a full understanding of the overall process characteristics. 

Future development will continue for a highly productive multi-compound trace analysis for the quantitation of mostly regulated target compounds. In addition, especially to comply with the aspects of food safety and product-safety requirements also non-targeted analytical techniques for the identification of potentially hazardous contaminants will evolve applying combined full scan and accurate mass capabilities.
