Front-end-of-line

For many operations, workers are assigned to assist in conducting decontamination of workers wearing Level A or B PPE during the decontamination process. Decontamination workers stationed at the front end of the decontamination line may require more protection from chemical and radiological contaminants than decontamination workers assigned to the latter stages of decontamination. 

Different methods are used. An online ordinary common blown or cast film line uses a machine direction orienter (MDO) on the front end of biaxially oriented film heated chamber extrusion line. If only the machine direction is to be stretched, a series of precision controlled heated rolls can be used. Film is fed through a series of rolls where it is sequentially heated, drawn around rolls that increase in rotational speed providing the stretching action, annealed around larger diameter roll(s), and cooled on a final roll(s). 

A schematic diagram of the front end of the beam line is shown in figure 4.8. The machine vacuum has to be protected. Hence, the beam lines emanating from the ring are separated from the main ring vacuum chamber. For an X-ray beam line this is by using a beryllium window at the front end of the beam line. For a soft X-ray or vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) line such a window would completely absorb the radiation of... 

Another development in HPLC analysis is the interfacing of on-line sample clean-up technologies at the front end of the HPLC analytical column. Using a switching valve, complex samples can be injected directly onto a sample preparation column, the stationary phase of which is designed to bind the analyte(s) of interest to the exclusion of the rest of the matrix, which runs to waste. Then the valve is switched and the mobile phase flows through the sample preparation column where it picks up the analyte(s) and carries them onto the analytical column and through to the detector in the normal way. This automation of sample preparation saves time and effort and reduces errors. There are many applications of HPLC assays in conjunction with on-line sample clean-up methods in the literature ... 

The press ram is fitted to the front end of the piston rod and can be rotated around the centre line or arranged in a fixed position. The press ram must be easily replaceable, as it is subject to wear and tear. It is made either of metal or plastic and may be of a convex or concave shape as the case may be. The position of the press ram is always displayed at the control panel. 

Naturally, in three-phase designs there are many possibilities for variations with the fitting of special baffles, chambers and channels into the front end of the bowl but the principle is the same. However the use of a skimmer (see Section 2.4.3) in three-phase designs is very useful in controlling the equilibrium line between the two liquid phases while the bow l is at speed. The casing design is, of course, different. 

In refractory applications such as the front end of a rotary cement kiln or the shaft of a vertical lime kiln, for example, the lining is subjected to high abrasive action from the charge material. In these regions it is important to install a material that can withstand the constant wearing action for long periods of time without a severe reduction in lining thickness. 

Because of the railroad-car shortage that has persisted for many years, boxcars are often used for bulk materials. Lined with suitable materials to prevent contamination and with special bulkheads at each door, these cars are acceptable substitutes for covered hopper cars even though unloading is more difficult. Vacuum conveying wands are used to pick up the material, as are front-end-loader-type vehicles.
