More recently, compounds bearing a second fluorine atom in position 6 (generally with ot configuration) have been developed (fluprednisolone). The introduction of this second fluorine atom can be performed by different pathways opening of 5,6-oxirane by HF, or electrophilic fluorination of dienol derivatives (cf. Figure 8.33, Chapter 8). " The fluorine in position 9 is introduced by means of the Fried method. These derivatives, substituted in both positions 6 and 9, are used in the treatment of asthma and allergy (fluocinolone, diflorasone, fluticasone cf. Chapter 8). 

In all cases, introduction of the fluorine on 9a is conducted by means of the Fried method. To date, there is no alternative method for this purpose. ...

I have therefore produced a type of two-film method for determining tray efficiency that has been checked to be within 3% accuracy of hundreds of answers calculated with the FRI method. Called the Erwin two-film method, it is recommended for all types of trays and will also calculate the liquid tray residence time in seconds. Pan-frying is a popular frying method at home and in many restaurants. The panfry stabilities of two oils with similar iodine values—mid-oleic sunflower oil (NuSun) and a commercial canola oil—were compared (121). Both oils have similar pan-fry stabihties, with few significant differences in the physicochemical properties during the heating process.

The method of Fried and Sabo for the in situ preparation of hypobromous acid from A-bromoacetamide (or A-bromosuccinimide) in aqueous dioxane or acetone containing perchloric acid is commonly used, e.g., (81) (82). 

Phenolic esters (1) of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids, when treated with a Lewis acid as catalyst, do undergo a rearrangement reaction to yield ortho- and para-acylphenols 2 and 4 respectively. This Fries rearrangement reaction is an important method for the synthesis of hydroxyaryl ketones. 

A mixture of d- and l- hexoses also results from the hydroboration of these 5-enes. Hydroboration results in anti-Markownikoff, cw-hydration of the double bond and the amount of each hexose formed varies according to the nature of the substituent groups. For example, hydroboration (23) of methyl 6-deoxy-a-D-ryZo-hex-5-enopyranose (3) affords methyl a-D-glucopyranoside and methyl / -L-idopyranoside in the ratio of 1 2.5 respectively whereas hydroboration of the fris-trimethylsilyl ether of 3 afforded them in the ratio 1 0.6 respectively. The hydroboration method can be used to achieve specific labelling of hexoses with tritium methyl-/ -L-idopyranoside[5-H3] and methyl a-D-glucopyranoside [5-H3] were thus prepared (23). Similarly, hydroboration of the D-Zt/ro-hex-5-eno derivative (14) with diborane-H3 followed by removal of the isopropyli-dene group, afforded methyl a-D-mannopyranoside [5-H3] and methyl / -L-gulopyranoside [5-H3] in the ratio of 1 2 respectively (23). 

A variant of Method B is the cyclization of the phenolic 2-(chloroacetamido)benzophenones 9, produced by photo-Fries rearrangement (see Houben-Weyl, Vol. 7/2a, p 1148 ff) of the esters 8, with ammonia via the corresponding iodoacetyl compounds.195...
