Friction test apparatus

A sliding-block friction test apparatus is located at Picatinny Arsenal.

The friction test apparatus employing ball-on-flat contact is shown in Figure l.b. In this apparatus a sliding surface of steel (52100) reciprocates under a steel (52100) ball. From the operating condition of ball-on-flat contact, mixed film lubrication is simulated.

There are two versions of the friction test apparatus in operation, a standard size apparatus and a small size version. The small device is particularly designed to test sensitive materials such as primary explosives. It can be operated with different weights on the porcelain bolt holder allowing loads in the range of 0.1 to 10 N. On the standard BAM friction test apparatus higher forces on the pin varying from 5 to 360 N can be applied.

Friction between the internal surface of the small intestine of porcine and silicon nitride ceramic was measured using an end-face friction test apparatus. Figure 1 iUustrates the shapes and the dimensions of specimens.
