Three-photon active (SPA) materials have been studied extensively over the last few years owing to their potential applications in the fields of telecommunications and biophotonics [26-28, 30], Two major advantages of these materials—longer excitation wavelengths and much better spatial confinement—make them attractive in comparison with two-photon absorption (2PA) based materials [29], One of the most important applications of SPA materials is three-photon pumped frequency-upconversion cavity-less lasing [26, 30], Short infra-red (IR) pulses induce the ASE process via 3-photon absorption followed by fast non-radiative decay to a long-lived state which collects population. Conventional experiments with a pulsed longitudinal pump [27, 28, 30] show that stimulated emission occurs in both forward and backward directions with respect to the pump pulse. [Pg.222]

Frequency upconversion of 800 nm ultrashort 175 fs optical pulses by two-photon absorption in a stilbenoid compound-doped polymer (PMMA) optical fiber was reported [28]. By the intensity-dependent transmission method, the two-photon absorption cross section was deduced. The combination of a well-designed organic chromophore incorporated into a fiber geometry is appealing for the development of an upconversion blue polymer laser. Upconversion fluorescence and optical power limiting effects based on the two- and three-photon absorption process of a frans-4,4 bis(pyrrolidinyl)stilbene were investigated [29]. The molecular TPA cross section three-photon absorption (3PA) cross section g3 at 720-1000 nm were measured. The 3PA-induced optical power-limiting properties were also illustrated at 980 nm. [Pg.320]

An important extension to the simplest upconversion experiment at a single detection frequency M2 is the practice of measuring time-resolvedfluorescence spectra, that is, the shape of the fluorescence spectrum... [Pg.1977]

Nd-doped YAl3(B03)4 is a self frequency doubling laser material that produces 0.53 jum laser output from 1.06 jum. (Lu et al, 1989). Accordingly, this material combines the functions of a conventional Nd-YAG laser and a SHG material like KTP. Another significant development in this field is the discovery of upconversion laser... [Pg.470]

The fluorescence quenching of Pe and derivatives has been investigated by fluorescence upconversion. Excitation was performed with the frequency-doubled output of a Ti Sapphire amplifier. The instrument response time was around 240 fs with 0.4 mm thick samples. The data were analysed by iterative reconvolution of the instrument response function with trial functions. For most samples, measurements were carried out at three different wavelengths (438, 475, and 490 nm). Global fits were done with all the available data. [Pg.328]

In this study we use the dye Coumarin 343 (C343) adsorbed on the surfaces of ZrC>2 nano particles in aqueous solution to study the solvation dynamics close to these surfaces. Zr02 is, in many respects, very similar to Ti02 and serves as a suitable model substance since, due to its higher band gap energy, electron injection from adsorbed dyes does not occur. To measure the time resolved Stokes shift, we used femtosecond frequency-resolved upconversion. [Pg.541]

In this section, I will discuss some of the more recent developments in continuum solvation dynamics in polar solvents. Some of these deal with incorporation of realistic models for chromophores [8,43 16] used in fluorescence-upconversion experiments, others with improvements in modeling of the solution dielectric properties [47,48], including incorporation solvent dielectric response over a wide frequency range [43,44, 46,48] into theories of SD. [Pg.371]

Non-linear optical effect An effect brought about by electromagnetic radiation the magnitude of which is not proportional to the irradiance. Non-hnear optical effects of importance to photochemists are harmonic frequency generation, lasers, Raman shifting, upconversion, and others. [Pg.326]
