Ionic polymerizations, whether anionic or cationic, should not be judged to be unimportant merely because our treatment of them is limited to two sections in this text. Although there are certain parallels between polymerizations which occur via free-radical and ionic intermediates, there are also numerous differences. An important difference lies in the more specific chemistry of the ionic mechanism. While the free-radical mechanism is readily discussed in general terms, this is much more difficult in the ionic case. This is one of the reasons why only relatively short sections have been allotted to anionic and cationic polymerizations. The body of available information regarding these topics is extensive enough to warrant a far more elaborate treatment, but space limitations and the more specific character of the material are the reasons for the curtailed treatment. [Pg.403]

Tocotrienols differ from tocopherols by the presence of three isolated double bonds in the branched alkyl side chain. Oxidation of tocopherol leads to ring opening and the formation of tocoquinones that show an intense red color. This species is a significant contributor to color quaUty problems in oils that have been abused. Tocopherols function as natural antioxidants (qv). Acrylonitrile and its comonomers can be polymerized by any of the weU-known free-radical methods. Bulk polymerization is the most fundamental of these, but its commercial use is limited by its autocatalytic nature. Aqueous dispersion polymerization is the most common commercial method, whereas solution polymerization is used ia cases where the spinning dope can be prepared directly from the polymerization reaction product. Often, the reaction mechanism is extremely complex and may involve catalysis or be dependent on the environment. Shielding and Stabilization. Inclusion compounds may be used as sources and reservoirs of unstable species. The inner phases of inclusion compounds uniquely constrain guest movements, provide a medium for reactions, and shelter molecules that self-destmct in the bulk phase or transform and react under atmospheric conditions. Clathrate hosts have been shown to stabiLhe molecules in unusual conformations that can only be obtained in the host lattice (138) and to stabiLhe free radicals (139) and other reactive species (1) similar to the use of matrix isolation techniques. Inclusion compounds do, however, have the great advantage that they can be used over a relatively wide temperature range. Cyclobutadiene, pursued for over a century has been generated photochemicaHy inside a carcerand container (see (17) Fig. 5) where it is protected from dimerization and from reactants by its surrounding shell (140). [Pg.75]

Most commercial processes involve copolymerization of ethylene with the acid comonomer followed by partial neutralization, using appropriate metal compounds. The copolymerization step is best carried out in a weU-stirred autoclave with continuous feeds of all ingredients and the free-radical initiator, under substantially constant environment conditions (22—24). Owing to the relatively high reactivity of the acid comonomer, it is desirable to provide rapid end-over-end mixing, and the comonomer content of the feed is much lower than that of the copolymer product. Temperatures of 150—280°C and pressures well in excess of 100 MPa (1000 atm) are maintained. Modifications on the basic process described above have been described (25,26). When specific properties such as increased stiffness are required, nonrandom copolymers may be preferred. An additional comonomer, however, may be introduced to decrease crystallinity (10,27). [Pg.408]

Density. The density (crystallinity) of catalyticaHy produced PE is primarily determined by the amount of comonomer ( a-olefin) in ethylene copolymer. This amount is easily controlled by varying the relative amounts of ethylene and the comonomer in a polymerization reactor. In contrast, the density of PE produced in free-radical processes is usually controlled by temperature. [Pg.368]

Catalyst Selection. The low resin viscosity and ambient temperature cure systems developed from peroxides have faciUtated the expansion of polyester resins on a commercial scale, using relatively simple fabrication techniques in open molds at ambient temperatures. The dominant catalyst systems used for ambient fabrication processes are based on metal (redox) promoters used in combination with hydroperoxides and peroxides commonly found in commercial MEKP and related perketones (13). Promoters such as styrene-soluble cobalt octoate undergo controlled reduction—oxidation (redox) reactions with MEKP that generate peroxy free radicals to initiate a controlled cross-linking reaction. [Pg.318]

Anionic polymerization offers fast polymerization rates on account of the long life-time of polystyryl carbanions. Early studies have focused on this attribute, most of which were conducted at short reactor residence times (< 1 h), at relatively low temperatures (10—50°C), and in low chain-transfer solvents (typically benzene) to ensure that premature termination did not take place. Also, relatively low degrees of polymerization (DP) were typically studied. Continuous commercial free-radical solution polymerization processes to make PS, on the other hand, operate at relatively high temperatures (>100° C), at long residence times (>1.5 h), utilize a chain-transfer solvent (ethylbenzene), and produce polymer in the range of 1000—1500 DP. [Pg.517]
