Free-Jacks

At last Mr. Tommie got him a wife. She was just a little girl, like, and she came from way down in the other end of the Parish, from near Covington or Slidell or one of those places. They do say that she was a free-jack. The free-jacks were a colony of half-white colored people who lived around Slidell and Lacombe, and who wouldn t associate with the colored people, or be classed with them. But the white people wouldn t accept the Free-Jacks as white people, nor let them go to the white schools. 

At any rate, they say that Mr. Tommie s white wife that he brought in was either a Free-Jack or had a touch of it in her. Some said that Mr. Tommie got her to show the white girls around there how independent he was. Others said that Mr. Tommie knew that no real white woman would be kind to those children, and he got a woman whose blood would help her be kind to his black and half-white children. 

Until the discovery in 1975 of nickel in jack bean urease (which, 50 years previously, had been the first enzyme to be isolated in crystalline form and was thought to be metal-free) no biological role for nickel was known. Let us assume that extra labor costs money. It is not free like the help given by David, Nancy, and Daniel. Then, all the above proposals to reduce the time it takes to change a tire cost money. If the use of a jack or hoist is to be avoided, more labor must be hired. If a hydraulic jack or power wrench is to be used, it must be purchased or rented. Finally, the remounting of the spare tire means spending extra money and effort in advance of the project. 

Urease (EC 3.5.1.5 Type IX, Sigma-Aldrich from Jack Beans) was used throughout the experiments. Before immobilizing urease onto the microreactor systems, the enzyme was evaluated for activity in the chosen buffer system (Tris[hydroxymethyl]aminomethane [THAM]). Free enzyme tests of the urease showed an approximate activity of 44,800 U/g of solid. 

It is only within the past decade that lectins have been purified to a homogeneity demonstrable by physicochemical and immunological criteria. Although Sumner and Howell crystallized the jack-bean lectin (concanavalin A or con A) over forty years ago, they were unable to free it completely from carbohydrate contaminants.102...

To compare two different FROC curves is difficult because the upper limit to the number of false detections per image is undefined. This means that there is no way to define the area under an FROC curve, like it is done for ROC curves. Currently, the most common method for comparing FROC curves is to use jack-knife FROC (JAFROC) (Chakraborty and Berbaum 2004). Another option is to compare the sensitivity values at a fixed false detection rate or to compare the false detection rates at a fixed sensitivity. This,however,has less statistical significance than comparing the whole curve using JAFROC. Free software for JAFROC is available from Dev Chakraborty at http //www.devchakraborty.com.
