Formed-in-place gaskets

In addition they are used as adhesives for heat-resistant bonds and, for example, formed in place gaskets, particularly in the automobile industry.

Anaerobic sealants are particularly effective as form-in-place gaskets for rigid flange structures. The anaerobic gasket replaces gasket inventories, but more importantly. 

Gasketing materials are generally preformed elastomers that are available as o-rings, rope, and other convenient shapes. Gaskets may also be cut from stock material such as thin sheet. However, sealants can be used to make formed-in-place gaskets. A ribbon of uncured sealant is applied to the flange area of the components to be sealed. On assembly of the components, the sealant is compressed to conform exactly to the mating surfaces. 

We have also inclnded form-in-place gasketing in this review because it uses important adhesive-sealants in several industries. 

It seems likely that liquid form-in-place gasketing will decline because of major changes in legislation and the performance requirements of the OEM.

Form-in-place gaskets for automotive areas such as valve covers, oil pans, thermostats, rear axle covers, automatic transmission housing, and tail light assemblies ...

Formed-in-place gaskets are a final example of adhesive sealants. These products reduce the need to stock assorted gaskets and thus enhance assembly efficiency. They are extruded manually or automatically on one of the surfaces involved just prior to assembly. Alternatively, formed-in-place gaskets may be silk screened. Silicones and polyesters are generally the resins of choice because of their adhesion, hot strength, low temperature flexibility, and good resistance to nearly all chemicals. 

RTV silicones are used by the automotive, appliance, and aerospace industries for electronic potting compounds and formed-in-place gaskets, to form molds for the manufacture of plastic parts, and widely in construction adhesives, sealants, roof coatings, and glazing. 

Formed-in-place gaskets - Silicone RTV sealants are widely used in this application for valve covers, oil pans, thermostats, rear view mirrors. Neoprene sealants have excellent oil and chemical resistance and SBR sealants give good bonding to oily surfaces. Gunnable butyl rubber mastics are used for vibration dampening of panels and as general sealants for frame and body parts. 

Formed-in-place gaskets have become very widely used to seal against oil leaks because of the excellent high temperature, impact, and oil resistance properties which are possible with these formulations.
