Lower cost per fL of heat-transfer surface. Replaceable straight tubes allow for easy internal cleaning. Full tube bundle minimizes shell-side bypassing. No packedjoints or internal gaskets, so hot and cold fluids cannot mix due to gasket failure. 

Detennining when a replacement is in kind, and when it is not tricky. For example, a facility may replace a gasket with another that is identical, and so in kind. However, the new gasket was probably made at a different time, possibly in a different factory, by different people, and was shipped and stored differently. Any of these changes could be significant enough to cause a failure of that gasket when it is put in service.
