Forced laborers

Altogether, there wasn t much more evidence than Bernstein had turned up two years before. There had been thousands of forced laborers working in the Farben plants yet here there wasn t a single statement from any of them to pin responsibility for their plight on any Farben director. Also puzzling was the absence of direct evidence about the Farben buna plant at the Auschwitz concentration camp. The "album of dedication" which Major Tilley had found at Geheimrat Schmitz s house had disappeared. Two weeks before, Drew Pearson, at my request, had advertised over the radio for its return. His appeal had got no response. I exclaimed "Farben must have kept some records at the Auschwitz site."...

Instead of manpower , use workers , staff , work force , labor , crew , employees , or personnel , depending on your meaning. 

In his book Sanning quotes Arthur R. Butz who pointed out that the International Red Cross made no mention in its Report, published in 1948, of any deportations of Jews to Auschwitz, but only of the beginning of Jewish tribulations in October 1944.37 Aside from violent excesses, this time did see some deportations, whose purpose and destination, however, was forced labor in the Reich, not Auschwitz (B348 S139f.). Therefore, Butz and Sanning assume that no adequate evidence exists to prove that Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz at all. 

After the war, the Soviets used Sachsenhausen as a concentration camp for themselves. Gerhart Schirmer was a former German soldier who ended up in that camp right at the end of the war until he was transferred to a forced labor camp in Siberia in 1950. In his memoirs, Schirmer described briefly how he and other prisoners were forced by the Soviets to build a gas chamber in Sachsenhausen half a year after World War II had ended 105... 

The third and final feature of pharmacy in the South was less enlightened but unmistakably present namely, its relationship to slavery. An economic system built on the forced labor of nearly 4 million... 

The ILO formulates international labor standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labor rights, that is, freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labor, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other... 

At BASF, suppliers and business partners are expected to observe the International Labour Organization s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights to Work. The Declaration calls on governments, companies, and worker organizations to uphold employees right to organize and bargain collectively and to eliminate child labor, forced labor, and discrimination in the workplace. BASF suppliers found to violate these labor standards can be terminated without notice if necessary (BASF, 2001).

Allied bombers took aim at these pillars of German military power. Between May 12, 1944, and April 4, 1945, some eighteen thousand bombs rained down on the Leuna Works, eventually bringing production at the factory to a complete standstill. Several hundred workers were killed, many of them forced laborers and prisoners of war who weren t allowed into bomb shelters. 

Panapanaan and Linnanen (2009) suggest that a successful social investment strategy should consider employees, suppliers, the community, and customers. They assert that a social risk assessment should be conducted to determine the organizational vulnerabilities, which in turn form the focus of the strategy. From an employee perspective, the social risk assessment should consider the following points of potential vulnerability diversity, discrimination, freedom of association, child labor, forced labor, absenteeism, compensation, and flexibility.
