For Example Photon Meets Electron—Solar Energy [Pg.263]

Titanium dioxide is used in paints because of its pure white color. When the sun is out, the titanium oxide particles can absorb the solar radiation and use this energy to promote its electrons to an excited, more reactive state. These electrons then act like tiny electron sources on diminutive batteries to break down organic pollutants, molecule by molecule. So as in the Aesop tale—the quarrel between the sun and the wind as to which was the stronger—that which resists force can often be conquered by gentle persuasion. The warm, welcome light of the sun. [Pg.264]

7 am happy, said M. Waldman, to have gained a discipie and if your appiication equais your abiiity, i have no doubt of your success. Chemistry is that branch of naturai phiiosophy in which the greatest improvements have been and may be made it is on that account that i have made it my pecuiiar study.  [Pg.267]

We have covered a great deal of territory. We discussed the nature of chemistry, the structure of atoms and chemical compounds, and the properties of elements as reflected in the periodic table. We explored fundamental classes of chemical reactions such as redox reactions, acid-base reactions, and displacement reactions. We laid out the theory that describes the nature of the chemical bond and the principles of chemical reactions. We discussed the practical considerations of intermolecular forces and concentration and considered the rarefied properties and reactions of gases. We contrasted the slippery properties of solutions with the concrete properties of solids. We delved into thermo- [Pg.267]

The inorganic chemist investigates the materials made from the other one hundred and some elements on the periodic table, an enormous undertaking. But while these compounds are rich and intricate in their behaviors, they do not form long, interconnected chains like the hydrocarbons do, so their diversity is in their elemental composition. Inorganic materials form the rock and salty solutions of Earth, the planets, and all the materials of the stars. Inorganic chemists devise syntheses for semiconductors, superconductors, alloys, and many other new materials. [Pg.268]
