Polyurethane elastomer shoe soles have received wide acceptance for women s fashion shoes as well as a variety of sports footwear. The lightweight microcellular shoe soles have permitted wide styling flexibility in women s shoes. Fine details simulating wood, cork, leather, and hand-stitching can be readily reproduced. New style sports shoes incorporate multi-color and multi-density soles. Other polyurethane elastomers will find ready use in high performance applications utilizing their superior wear, corrosion and abrasion resistance properties. 

The footwear industry uses polyurethane as microcellular elastomer for shoe soles thermoplastic elastomers for ski boots, coatings for shoe uppers, and adhesives. The microcellular elastomer shoe soles have been used for over 10 years. The polyurethane shoe sole offers lightweight and flexibility in styling. Fine detail simulating wood, cork, leather, and handstitching can be readily reproduced. New style sport shoes have been developed to incorporate multi-colors and multi-density soles. As a result, these shoe soles are used in women s high-fashion shoes, work shoes, and a variety of leisure and sport shoes. The current demand for polyurethane shoe soles is for continued steady growth and demand. There has been a continued shift of the shoe sole market to the Middle East and Eastern European areas. 

A steel toe cap should cover the entire length of the toes, from their tips to beyond the natural bend of (he foot. A soft pad covering the edge of the toecap increases comfort. If the toe-cap cuts into the foot, either the size or style of the footwear is incorrect. 

Refer to 29 CFR 1910.136 for OSHA standards addressing foot protection. Select safety shoes made of sturdy materials with impact-resistant toes. Some shoes contain metal insoles that protect against puncture woimds. Additional protection in the form of metatarsal guards can provide additional protection. Today s safety shoes come in a variety of styles and materials. Classification of safety shoes relates directly to their ability to meet requiranents of compression and impact tests. Protective footwear must comply with the requirements found in the ANSI Z-41.1 Standard. 

Footwear components Footwear consists of a number of different components (as shown in Figure 6.10) and described in the next sections. Some terms refer to parts that all shoes have, such as the sole while other terms may only apply to certain types or style of shoes. 

The variety of styles of safety footwear available today is also being impacted by changing workforce demographics. As Baby Boomers continue to age and leave the workforce, they are being replaced by younger workers who don t want conventional safety footwear.
