How to deal with the pests that attack plants under cultivation is a continuing challenge to the food and agricultural production system. Natural resistance or tolerance to pests has proven to be one of the safest and least costly ways to protect plants. As we identify the specific plant components involved and their actions, it will be easier to incorporate the capacity to produce the desired chemical into the plant of Interest. There is the further possibility to identify additional natural chemicals that may be useful as pest control materials. The latter might be through the use of natural products or it might be products of industrial synthesis patterned after the natural products. It is clear that allelochemicals are involved in these complex processes and they hold promise for even a greater role. [Pg.3]

Technicon Instruments Corp. (1977) Digestion and Sample Preparation for the Analysis of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen and/or Total Phosphorus in Food and Agricultural Products using the Technicon BD-20/40 Block Digestor, Technicon Industrial Method No.369-75A, Technicon Instruments Corporation, New York, USA. [Pg.213]

There are two categories of white oils technical white oils and medicinal white oils. The technical white oils, which are already highly dearomatized, are used for specialized lubricants, particularly in the textile industry, and also as components in cosmetics, as plasticizers in the rubber or plastics industries, or as emulsion bases for certain pulverized agriculture products. The medicinal white oils, whose dearomatization is pushed further still, are used in pharmaceuticals, or in the food industry, wherever residual oils might be in contact with food. [Pg.291]

Control laboratories in the canned food industry are usually divorced from the research organization to a lesser degree than is the case in the chemical and allied industries. For this reason, a closer relationship exists between the problems of the control laboratory and the research laboratory. Although from a research standpoint this condition is often considered undesirable, it has considerable merit in the case of the canned food industry, in which production may be seasonal and often of rather short duration. The collection of control data in many instances may also serve for research purposes—for example, in the case of soil analyses, which may be correlated with agricultural research designed to improve crop yields. Because the variables which affect the quality of canned foods must usually be investigated rather extensively, and often over a period of more than one year, the application of statistical methods to data collected for control purposes can conceivably make a substantial contribution to a research program. [Pg.69]

The growth of industrial scale biotransformation processes has increased significantly over recent years with more than 130 reported in 2002 [1]. Major activity is focussed on the production of chiral pharmaceuticals although a number of large scale industrial processes have been developed for the food and agricultural industries. [Pg.24]

Biopract provides technological products and processes for industry, agriculture, and environment. They not only produce technical enzyme preparations but also develop enzymes for applications in agriculture, food, and textile industry as well as in environmental technologies. On the later, bioremediation has been an area of service delivery from Biopract. Their activities regards microbial preparations for the bioremediation of organic contaminants (mineral oil (MKW), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE), volatile organic hydrocarbons (VOC), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)). [Pg.251]
