Focusing on the System

To simplify the discussion of the roie of the totai change in the entropy, we need to introduce a new state function, the Gibbs energy, which wiil be used extensively in our study of bioenergetics and biological stmcture.

The great advantage of this formula is that it expresses the total entropy change of the system and its surroundings in terms of the properties of the system alone. The only restriction is that the expression is confined to changes at constant pressure and temperature.

To make this connection, we must be careful to realize that changes in the universe involve both the system and its surroundings. If we focus on the system alone, we cannot understand how order is created at all. Yet, the synthesis of polymers shows that it does happen, as do everyday situations such as the growth of plants, animals, and people. To express the second law of thermodynamics in terms of entropy, we must focus on the total change in entropy for the universe, AS,. 

Most accidents do not happen because of a single mistake or one faulty work process. Instead, they are due to multiple small causes, each insufficient to create an accident, but potentially deadly when combined with others. Progress in patient safety requires a focus on the system and on imderstanding the nature of technical work, not on individuals. Continual dialogue and sharing about technical work is what moves the aims of patient safety forward. Weaknesses must be made visible and transparent in order fitr a safer health care system to be created.
