The Stocks search allows querying by cytological location as well as by symbol. For comprehensive instructions for searching stock lists, see section C.3.3. of FlyBase Reference Manual C Using FlyBase on the Web. [Pg.519]

The References section of FlyBase houses a searchable bibliography of publications about the genetics and biology of Drosophila, with a satellite file of journal and book abbreviations used in compiling the bibliography. FlyBase captures personal communications as publications, to accommodate otherwise unpublished information from the research community. Wherever possible, genetic and biological data presented in FlyBase are linked to the publication in which the data appeared. [Pg.520]

The FlyBase home page includes a link to the Reference Manual. This manual describes the searches, content, and format for each data section, with an explanation of the crosslinks within FlyBase and between FlyBase and external databases. The Reference Manual is extensively hyperlinked within itself, to the files it describes, and to external resources. Each FlyBase data class provides a link, under Documents, back to the relevant section of the reference manual. [Pg.511]

FlyBase text searches are accessible from many different entry points the home page itself, the All Searches page, or the relevant data class page. In most cases, both simple and complex queries are available on the data class pages. FlyBase sections with searchable text include Genes, Aberrations, Clones, People, Stocks, Transposons, FlyBase documentation. News archives, and References (these data classes are described below. Scope of FlyBase Data Types). [Pg.512]

Most FlyBase search forms include hyperlinks to Help retrieve documents. For a full description of the searches available on FlyBase, see Reference Manual C, Using FlyBase on the Web under section C.3 FlyBase Search Tools. [Pg.513]

Reports encompass a wide diversity of data and can be very large. For this reason, FlyBase offers the user alternative formats (listed after Report Content ) for displaying reports. These alternative subsets of the data all draw on the same Full report. For more complete descriptions of the data sections described below, see FlyBase on-line Reference Manual B Detailed Descriptions of FlyBase Structure and Data. [Pg.516]

The Genes section of FlyBase includes information on Drosophila genes that have been defined genetically and/or molecularly and includes links to separate records for each allele of the gene. Each gene has a valid symbol, by which it is referred in all instances that... [Pg.516]

The Aberrations section contains reports on chromosomal rearrangements such as translocations, duplications and deficiencies, ring chromosomes, and inversions (including balancers). The system used for assigning symbols to aberrations is described in the Nomenclature guidelines (in the FlyBase Documents directory). Many aberrations are referred to in the literature by symbol(s) that do not correspond to the valid symbol. FlyBase stores these as synonyms. [Pg.518]

Smaller files (1 Mbyte or less) can be saved directly from the browser window under the File menu. Larger files are more reasonably obtained using FTP. For comprehensive instructions and FTP addresses for obtaining FlyBase files, see Reference Manual section D.2 FlyBase by FTP, and for field descriptions, see Reference Manual section B Detailed Descriptions of FlyBase Structure and Data. [Pg.521]
