The flushing action of the toilet commences when the bowl is filled from a reservoir until the water level tops the inverted-U-shaped trap and starts to spill over the other side. Once water starts to flow over the side of the trap, it pulls the rest of the water with it, as a chain would pull the links that are attached to it down to a lower level. With water, intermolecular attractions form the chain that pulls the water molecules one after another. This siphoning action has to initiate quickly so that water will surge over the trap and make a moving seal. [Pg.142]

Pebble-cobble beaches consist of materials ranging in size from 2 to 256 mm. Some fine materials may be present in the interstitial areas between pebbles and there may also be large boulders in the area. Oil readily penetrates pebble-cobble beaches through the open spaces between the rocks. Retention of the oil may be low as it is often flushed out from the interstitial areas by natural tide or wave action. Oil will likely concentrate on the upper reaches, however, where there is little flushing action. As wave action constantly rearranges or reworks the sediments, few animals and plants are present, especially in the middle intertidal zone. The ballast tanks as shown in Fig. 11.4 are internally mounted air tanks arranged in two groups, 9 central and 18 peripheral. Each ballast tank is 16 ft high and 3 ft in diameter. The bottom tapers to a cone and terminates in a nozzle 2 ft above the floor of the tank. Air is supplied to each tank intermittently at a controlled pressure for a specific time, resulting in a flushing action. When the air supply is off, the air in the ballast tank vents through a -in hole near the top of the waste tank in the air-supply line and allows the solution to flow back into the ballast tank. For a full waste tarik, air at 15 psig is supplied to a central ballast tank for about 60 s. [Pg.578]
