Fluoride osteosarcoma

Beryllium metal, beryllium-aluminum alloy, beryl ore, beryllium chloride, beryllium fluoride, beryllium hydroxide, beryllium sulfate, and beryllium oxide all produce lung tumors in rats exposed by inhalation or intra-tracheally. Three limited early carcinogenicity bioassays in three different strains of mice by oral administration of sodium fluoride (NaF) revealed no exceptional tumor incidences. A subsequent NTP study reported equivocal evidence of carcinogenicity based on osteosarcomas in 4 of 80 male rats administered 175 ppm NaF in the drinking water for 2 years. Another study examined the relationship between fluoride levels and osteosarcoma, a rare malignant bone tumour, commonly occiuring in the age group of 10-24 years. This study was planned in order to analyse serum levels of fluoride in patients of osteosarcoma and fluoride content of their drinking water by comparing 10 patients of osteosarcoma and 10 healthy volxmteers (who served as control) [31 ]. 

Serum and drinking water fluoride levels were estimated by ion-selective electrodes. Both the serum and drinking water fluoride levels were significantly higher in patients wi osteosarcoma as compared to controls. These results suggest a link between fluoride exposure and osteosarcoma.

Thus, pyrrolylpyrazoles are promising compounds that can be applied in medicine and for solution of environmental problems, since fluoride anions possess neurotoxicity and cause osteosarcoma and DNA mutation.
