To aid in the housekeeping duties, use a powered sweeper and floor scrubber for cleaner, neater aisles. Pedestrian aisles, such as those illustrated in Figure 8-4, require ongoing attention. 

Barometric condenser systems can be a major source of contamination in plant effluents and can cause a particularly difficult problem by producing a high-volume, dilute waste stream [8]. Water reduction can be achieved by replacing barometric condensers with surface condensers. Vacuum pumps can replace steam jet eductors. Reboilers can be used instead of live steam reactor and floor washwater, surface runoff, scrubber effluents, and vacuum seal water can be reused. 

The future of battery driven vehicles for specialized purposes, such as the electric locomotives using during construction of the Channel Tunnel which used 100 kWh batteries, or the floor sweepers/scrubbers now used in airport terminals, industrial premises and railway stations, is assured. What is of much greater significance is the future of EVs in the general automobile industry which currently has a turnover of some 500 billion. 

In the case of Bhopal, water entered into pipes on the floor of the factory during routine cleaning but safety slips had not been placed at the joints. Water reached Tank E-610. The exothermic reaction between water and MIC increased the temperature of the tank converting liquid MIC into gas. The increase in pressure forced open the vent valve letting most of the MIC escape to the outside as gas. Various safety measures to neutralize MIC, such as caustic soda scrubbers, were not functional or unserviceable. Even if safety measures had been in perfect workig order, they could not have handled such a big leak. Fortunately, MIC stored in the other two tanks (E-611 and E-619) was not affected it was later converted to pesticide in what was...

Scrubber units are typically configured vertically and are located next to the fume hood as shown in Figure 8.7. They are also produced in a top mount version, in which the packing, spray manifold, and mist eliminator sections are located on top of the hood and the sump and liquid handling portion are underneath the hood for a compact arrangement taking up no more floor area than the hood itself.

Also to be considered are the specialty mortars derived from the acid-resistant cements. These mortars can be applied to steel or concrete to provide remarkable acid, alkali, and heat resistance. They may be reinforced with wire mesh to sustain the heavy thicknesses normally applied. Coefficients of expansion close to that of steel have been attained to resolve one of the major problems when applying inorganic materials on steel. These can be used as floors, tank interiors, in scrubbers, and other process equipment of clean interior design.
