Floodwater flora

The photo synthetic aquatic biomass comprises cyanobacteria (formerly called blue-green algae), planktonic, filamentous and macrophytic algae, and vascular macrophytes. The net productivity of the floodwater depends on the level of primary production by the photosynthetic biomass versus its consumption by grazing animals, particularly cladocerans, copepods, ostracods, insect larvae and molluscs. Their role will change as the canopy develops and at a leaf area index of about 6-7 there will be no more photosynthetically active radiation available to them. [Pg.154]

Information on the productivity of the floodwater is scarce. Data compiled for ricefields by Roger (1996) give an average of 0.351 dry wt ha of cyanobacteria. [Pg.154]

The water column and soil surface are often the main sites of biological nitrogen fixation in wetland systems (Buresh et al., 1980 Roger 1996). Biological nitrogen fixation is the process by which atmospheric N2 is reduced to NH4+ and the [Pg.156]

In wetlands N2 fixation can occur in the water colnmn, in the aerobic water-soil interface, in the anaerobic soil bulk, in the rhizosphere, and on the leaves and stems of plants. Phototrophic bacteria in the water and at the water-soil interface are generally more important than non-photosynthetic, heterotrophic bacteria in the soil and on plant roots (Buresh et al, 1980 Roger 1996). The phototrophs comprise bacteria that are epiphytic on plants and cyanobacteria that are both free-living and epiphytic. A particularly favourable site for cyanobacteria is below the leaf surface of the water fern Azolla, which forms a very efficient symbiosis with the cyanobacterinm Anabaena azollae. This symbiosis and those in various leguminous plants have been exploited in traditional rice prodnction systems to sustain yields of 2 to 4 t ha of grain withont fertilizer for hnndreds of years. [Pg.157]
