The majority of commercial LB troughs use the Wilhehny plate method for measurement of surface pressure (II), although some use the alternate Langmuir float method. The plate material most commonly used is cut pieces of filter paper, of negligible cost and completely wetted by water. The other type of plate used is a piece of high-purity platinum metal, which can be cleaned in a flame and gives a reproducible contact angle with water of 60°. [Pg.60]

Intertidal life forms are particularly vulnerable to oil since they consist primarily of plants and animals that move slowly or not at all. It takes from months to years for an oiled intertidal zone to recolonize. Intertidal life may also be damaged by cleanup efforts, particularly by the movement of people and vehicles and by cleaning water that is either too hot or under high pressure. A cleanup method should minimize environmental effects, not simply remove the oil at all costs. Oil should only be removed to prevent it from being re-floated and oiling other shorelines. Oil stranded in the intertidal zone may cause less harm if left than if removed. If the biota is already dead, however, oil is sometimes removed so that the area can recolonize. [Pg.163]

High-Pressure Water Jet Systems. High-pressure water jet systems employ spray nozzles set above the water surface on floating rafts or other structures. The nozzles are positioned so that they spray in an overlapping, fan-shaped pattern across the surface of the water. They are directed downward at an angle to create a countercurrent to the water movement. Water pressure to the nozzles must be maintained for the duration of the confinement operation or until other methods are employed. With sufficient water pressure, confinement can be accomplished at current speeds greater than 1.0 mph. [Pg.286]

Various shear stress measurement techniques have been proposed in the literature. Some of the principal measurement techniques are Stanton tube, Preston tube, electrochemical technique, velocity measurements, thermal method, floating element sensors, sublayer fence, oil-film interferometry and shear stress sensitive liquid crystal. The Stanton tube is a rectangular shaped pitot tube located very close to the boundary wall and the mean velocity measured from this pitot tube pressure difference is directly related to the shear stress. The Preston tube is similar to the concept of the Stanton tube using a pitot static tube close to the surface and the difference between the stagnation pressure at the center of the tube from the static pressure is related to the shear stress. The electrochemical or mass transfer probe is flush mounted with the wall and the concentration at the wall element is maintained constant. The measurement of mass transfer rate between the fluid and the wall element is used for determination of the wall shear stress. One of the limitations of the mass transfer probe is that at very high flow rates, the mass transfer rate becomes large and it may not be possible to maintain the wall concentration constant. A detailed discussion on the above three techniques can be found in Hanratty and Campbell [1]. These shear stress measurement techniques are not ideal MEMS-based techniques. [Pg.1817]
