First Print

Wax Printing. This is a special case of resist printing and widely used in African designs. Wax is first printed onto cotton fabric to give a patterned effect, and the fabric is then dyed. The wax resists penetration of the dye and reserves the fabric. The wax is then removed by either alkaU washing or solvent when it is also recovered for future use. Other colors can then be printed, if so desired, on the nondyed areas. A2oic dyes or reactive dyes can be used for this.

The German text was first printed in Johann Grasshof [Hermannus Condeesyanus] Dyas chymica tripartita, Frankfurt, 1625 and a Latin translation included in the Muscieum Hermeticum, issued by the same publisher, Lukas Jennis, in the same year. 

Description of the illustrations. "This poem was first printed in Nicolas Barnaud, Triga chemica de lapide philosophico tractatus tres..., Leiden 1599, but without illustrations. This was reprinted in volume III of the Theatrum Chemicum, 1602. It was issued by Lucas Jennis three times in 1625 with a series of 15 emblems. The three books issued were Dyas chymica tripartita, the Musaeum hermeticum, and De lapide philosophico.

The City of the Sun, by Tommaso Campanella [1568-1639], was originally written in Italian in 1602, just after he was condemned to life imprisonment for sedition and heresy. The original manuscript is in the Bibliotheca Govemativa, Lucca, Tuscany. It was later revised and a Latin version was written in 1613-14. The first printed edition in Latin was issued at Frankfurt in 1623. This is one of the most important utopias, and may have influenced Bacon s New Atlantis. This was one of the oddest announcements of a discovery in the history of science. Dalton announced his discovery of his atomic theory while declining to say what the theory was. Five years were to pass before he rectified this omission. The first printed account of his theory was given in his book, A New System of Chemical Philosophy, which was published in 1808. Only 5 of its 220 pages were devoted to an exposition of his theory. However, the atomic nature of matter was assumed throughout the book.

It is of interest that the title of Geber s principal work, elaborated in the printed edition to Summa Perfections Magisterii, etc., is given in the earlier manuscripts by the word Summa alone. Petrus Bonus (1330) often referring to Geber, also uses only the title Summa. The statement made by Darmstaedter that no manuscripts of the three other works are known earlier than the first printed works, is in harmony with the fact that Petrus Bonus seems to know only the Summa. It may be possible, therefore, that the other works credited to Geber may be elaborations by later writers. 

A work entitled De Natura Rerum bears, in its dedication the date of 1537 at Villach. It was first printed in 1573 and Professor Sudhoff, the greatest authority on the writings of Paracelsus, doubts the authenticity of all portions of the nine books comprising the work.0 This work contains muck of chemical facts and processes and is of interest for the chemistry of the time.
