First break

The first-break roUs of a mill are cormgated rather than smooth like the reduction roUs that reduce the particles of endosperm further along in the process. The rollers are paired and rotate inward against each other and at different speeds. The clearance between rollers and the pressure as well as the speed of each separate roUer, can be adjusted. At each breaking step, the miller selects the milling surface and the cormgations the speed of and interrelation between the rollers depend on the type and condition of the wheat. 

Emulsified oil contains a Hquid film so that it will not separate by gravity without first breaking the emulsion. This is achieved by adding surfactants, emulsion breaking polymers or coagulants. After the emulsion is broken, the conventional technologies described above are appHcable.

Analysis proceeds from the assumption that in order to understand a system one must first break it up into its constituent parts. Understanding then comes from the knowledge gained by reconstructing the system. But for systems whose dynamics depend critically on interaction between pai ts, analysis often misses the essential characteristics of the whole system. Synthesis is the complementary act of putting the individual pieces together in order to understand what they do collectively. Understanding complex synthesis requires that both analysis and synthesis be done.

We note, however, that even if methane comes from the photolysis of the methyl ester, this does not necessarily mean that all of it arises as a result of first breaking down the PET itself by photolysis. Both the PET of early reports and also the PECT were undoubtedly produced using dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) instead of terephthalic acid and so have methyl ester end groups owing to the well-known incomplete reaction of the DMT. There may be only a small level of these ester groups, but the amount of methane produced was small as well. This, at the very least, causes some potential confusion about the source of all the methane should some of it come from methyl ester photolysis. No such confusion would exist for the ethane should that be coming from photolysis of an ethyl ester. 

Studebaker (63) studied the potentiometric titration of surface oxides in nonaqueous medium. Using sodium aminoethoxide in ethylene diamine, he found indications for the appearance of two breaks in the titration curves. The first break was attributed to carboxyl groups or groups of similar acidity, the second one to phenols. Only two-thirds of the acidity that was determined by NaOH neutralization could be titrated in nonaqueous medium.

The concentration of ozone taken up by the media containing linolenic acid is plotted against time after addition in Figure 8. The rate of ozone breakdown is constant (ozone uptake linear with time) for the first two min until about 0.12 ml ozone are absorbed and then the rate decreases sharply, reaching a steady-state rate of ozone uptake between 10-12 min. This first break in the curve corresponds to an ozone uptake of 0.12 ml + (24 moles/liter) = 0.005 millimoles (or 10 M). This is equivalent to 1 mole of linolenic acid added per mole ozone absorbed. Thiobarbituric acid reactant production is also plotted on the same axis. This compound (TBA reactant) probably arises by formation of a three-carbon fragment (malondialdehyde) from the ozone-induced oxidation of linolenic acid (23). The rate of TBA reactant formation is also linear for the first 2 min at which point the curve undergoes a less pronounced break. Malondialdehyde formation ceases immediately when the ozone is shut off (Scrub 1 on). An oxygen control sample produced no malondialdehyde.

If successful, the initial loaded holes adjacent to relief hole will break out along most of the lengths of the holes by first breaking to the relief hole, and then by blowing rock out of the hole. This will create an open hole at the center of the drift to which remaining relief holes may break in successive rings by slabbing. 

One of the first breaks from traditional analytical chemistry was the addition of microchemical methods. These methods essentially extended macro-scale techniques so that lliey could be applied for determinations involving very small (milligram) quantities of samples.
