Firefighting automatic sprinkler systems

The term engineered safety covers the provision in the design of control systems, alarms, trips, pressure-relief devices, automatic shutdown systems, duplication of key equipment services and firefighting equipment, sprinkler systems, and blast walls, to contain any fire or explosion. 

In addition, this subpart establishes the requirements for the placement, use, maintenance, and testing of portable fire extinguishes provided for use by employees, as well as the requirements for all automatic sprinkler systems installed to meet a particular OSH A standard. Firefighting equipment is to be available and readily accessible. Workers are to be trained annually on the use of fire extinguishers. 

A fire in the third floor of a paper-storage warehouse in Illinois resulted in a 50 million loss. The building did not contain an automatic detection system, but it did have an automatic sprinkler system. Two firefighters were injured fighting the fire.

Effective use of water cannot be accomplished if the water cannot reach the burning fuel directly. For this reason, areas where firefighters cannot readily reach the fire with water streams, such as high-rise buildings and high-piled storage areas, must be provided with automatic sprinklers or other automatic fire-protection system.
