Impact on the environment may result from both unwanted fires, improper control of fire effluent or improper use of suppression system agents. Environmental considerations impact decisions on whether to provide protection for a hazard, and whether this protection should be provided automatically or manually. Where water supplies are inadequate for conventional firefighting and foam making, automatically activated fixed clean agent or CO2 systems may be considered for seal fire protection. The agent should be discharged into the seal area below the secondary seal. Fire detection options for these automatic systems include reusable thermal wires and pneumatic tube devices. Thermal wire is typically the more economical choice. 

Different types of protective clothing need to withstand attack from specific environmental hazards and thus require the constituent textile materials to have high performance in specific properties. For example, a body armour system requires the textile materials used to have superior mechanical properties firefighters clothing requires its component materials to have exceptional fire resistance properties and chemical protective clothing requires the materials to be resistant to the attacks of chemical agents.
