The easiest method for creating many vibrational excitations is to use convenient pulsed visible or near-UV lasers to pump electronic transitions of molecules which undergo fast nonradiative processes such as internal conversion (e.g. porjDhyrin [64, 65] or near-IR dyes [66, 62, 68 and 62]), photoisomerization (e.g. stilbene [12] or photodissociation (e.g. Hgl2 [8]). Creating a specific vibrational excitation D in a controlled way requires more finesse. The easiest method is to use visible or near-UV pulses to resonantly pump a vibronic transition (e.g. [Pg.3038]

At 10Hz in a typical Nd-YAG laser 1000Hz/- /Hz, and the typical finesse asymmetry is of the order of one percent. In order to detect a gw signal the laser frequency noise has to be lowered by six orders of magnitudes (compared to the noise of a free running laser), and the two arms made as identical as possible. In order to achieve this complex frequency stabilization methods are employed in all interferometric detectors, and in order to insure the perfect symmetry of the interferometer, all pairs of Virgo optical components are coated during the same run (both Fabry-Perot input mirrors then both end mirrors are coated simultaneously). [Pg.322]

The term fine chemicals is widely used (abused ) as a descriptor for an enormous array of chemicals produced at small scale and is frequently assumed to infer a significant added value of the product derived from the degree of complexity (number of functional groups, geometric isomers, and enantiomers) and precision in their manufacture. Whether the term fine chemicals refers to the finesse of the chemistry or to the small scale of manufacture is far from clear. However, in order to assist our discussion the following division can be adopted [2] ... [Pg.309]

When the reflectivity of the two end faces is low (e.g., 4% from an air-glass interface), the multiplex reflections in the cavity have negligible contribution to the optical interference. Under this circumstance, the FP cavity is commonly referred to as the low-finesse cavity and the signal can be modeled using a two-beam interference model, given by5,6 ... [Pg.147]

The FPI principle can also be used to develop thin-film-coating-based chemical sensors. For example, a thin layer of zeolite film has been coated to a cleaved endface of a single-mode fiber to form a low-finesse FPI sensor for chemical detection. Zeolite presents a group of crystalline aluminosilicate materials with uniform subnanometer or nanometer scale pores. Traditionally, porous zeolite materials have been used as adsorbents, catalysts, and molecular sieves for molecular or ionic separation, electrode modification, and selectivity enhancement for chemical sensors. Recently, it has been revealed that zeolites possess a unique combination of chemical and optical properties. When properly integrated with a photonic device, these unique properties may be fully utilized to develop miniaturized optical chemical sensors with high sensitivity and potentially high selectivity for various in situ monitoring applications. [Pg.159]
