Filtration data cake moisture content

The mass of solid and liquid in the cake remains constant throughout washing and equal to the values present at the end of filtration (M = 50 kg and M = 50.9 kg) as does the cake moisture content (M = 50.46%). It is evident from the data in Table 6.13 that (theoretically) only 1.4 rather than the specified 3.5 wash ratios are required to purify the cake. However, as for the diaphragm press described in Section 6.4.1, losses in the pipes etc. of the filter will tend to raise the theoretical number of wash ratios as will any imperfections in the... 

Data collected for each run included acid analysis using inductively coupled plasma (ICF) to determine cation concentration and titration to determine H concentration. Filtering characteristics were determined using solid and filtrate yield rates, as well as back pressures during the filtration cycle. The filter cake was characterized by moisture content and composition. Solid samples were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine changes in particle shape and size under various process conditions, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the solids composition.
