Major suppliers for organic fillers include GCA Chemical Corp. and Composition Materials of America (com cobs) Akrochem Corp., American Fillers Abrasives, and James River Corp. (flock and fiber) Agrashell Inc. and Composition Materials of America (nutshell and hull flours) Composition Materials of America (rice hulls) and Akrochem, American Wood Fiber, and Smith Chemical Color (wood flour). [Pg.381]

Greases should resist oxidation and must not gum, harden, or decompose. They must not contain dirt, fillers, abrasive matter, excessive moisture, free add, or free lime. [Pg.450]

Tripoli. TripoH [1317-95-9] is a fine grained, porous, decomposed siHceous rock produced mainly in Arkansas, Illinois, and Oklahoma. It is widely used for polishing and buffing metals, lacquer finishing, and plated products. Since tripoH particles are rounded, not sharp, it has a mild abrasive action particularly suited for polishing. TripoH is also used in toothpastes, in jewelry polishing, and as filler in paints, plastics, and mbber. Rottenstone and amorphous siHca are similar to tripoH and find the same uses. In 1987 the abrasive use of tripoH in the United States totaled 26.6 million tons and was valued at about 3.1 million however, the portion used as a filler totaled 71.1 million tons and had a value of almost 10 million (4). [Pg.10]

Hardness. The hardness (qv), or related property abrasiveness, is an important filler property. Hardness is determined by comparison to materials of known hardness on the Mohs scale. On this nonlinear scale, diamond is rated 10, quartz 7, calcite 3, and talc 1. The abrasiveness of a filler is also dependent on psd and the presence of impurities, eg, ka olin clay (Mohs hardness of 3) can be quite abrasive because of the presence of quartz impurities. [Pg.368]

Nittile mbber is much like SBR in its physical properties. It can be compounded for physical strength and abrasion resistance using traditional fillers such as carbon black, siUca, and reinforcing clays. The primary benefit of the polymer is its oil and solvent resistance. At a medium ACN content of 34% the swell in IRM 903 oil at 70°C is typically 25—30%. Nitrile mbber processes on conventional mbber equipment and can be compression, transfer, or injection molded. It can also be extmded easily. [Pg.232]

The apex (often referred to as bead filler) compound must be formulated for excellent dynamic stiffness to facilitate stress distribution and provide good car handling properties. The bead insulation compound must possess good adhesion to this most important component for enclosing the pHes of the tire and holding the tine to the rim. The chafer/rim strip compound protects the pHes from rim abrasion and seals the tire to the rim. [Pg.248]

Fillers, eg, clays and whiting, are used to reduce cost or provide special properties. Fillers do not reinforce mbber deposited from latex, excepting to improve abrasion resistance. They are also used to increase viscosity for latex compound spreading suitabiUty. [Pg.253]
