Toxoid vaccines. Toxoid vaccines are preparations derived fiom the toxins that are seereted by eertain species of bacteria, hi the manufacture of such vaccines, the toxin is separated fiem the bacteria and treated in a way that eliminates toxicity without eliminating immunogenicity. Formalin (ca. 38% of formaldehyde gas in water) is used for this purpose and consequently the treated toxins are often referred to as formol toxoids. Toxoid vaccines are veiy effective in the prevention of those diseases such as diphtheria and tetanus in which the harmful effects of the infecting bacteria are due to the deleterious action of bacterial toxins on physiology and biochemistry. [Pg.306]

The isolation of a particular microorganism fiem a markedly spoiled product does not necessarily mean that it was the initiator of the attack. It could be a secondaiy opportunist contaminant which has overgrown the primary spoilage organism once the physico-chemical properties had been favourably modified by the primary spoiler. [Pg.361]

An FIEM(A), the family of isomeric ensembles of molecules of A, is the set of all EM(A), Thus, an FIEM is described simply by a gross, empirical formula an EM is described by a list of molecular species in terms of constitutional formulas. The constitutional chemistry of a set of atoms A can be described by the structure of its FIEM(A). [Pg.35]

The chemical constitution of a molecule or an ensemble of molecules (EM) of n atoms is representable by a symmetric n X n BE-matrix and corresponds accordingly to a point P in TR ( +D/a an n(n +1)/2 dimensional Euclidean space, the Dugundji space of the FIEM(A). The "city block distance of two points P i and P 2 is twice the number of electrons that are involved in the interconversion EMi EM2 of those EM that belong to the points Pi and P2. This chemical metric on the EM of an FIEM provides not only a formalism for constitutional chemistry, but also allows us to use the properties of Euclidean spaces in expressing the logical structure of the FIEM, and thus of constitutional chemistry 3e>32c>. [Pg.35]

In the constitutional model of Ugi, rather than molecules, "ensemble of molecules (EM) are used in which the molecules can be either chemically different or identical. Like molecules, an EM has an empirical formula, which is the sum of the empirical formulae of the constiment molecules and describes the collection A of atoms within the EM under consideration. All the EM s which can be formed from A have the same empirical formula . Therefore, an EM(A) consists of one or more molecules which can be obtained from A using each atom which belongs to A only once. Moreover, a FIEM(A) or a family of isomeric EM, is the collection of all EM(A) and it is determined by the empirical formula . On the other hand, a chemical reaction, or a sequence of chemical reactions, is the conversion of an EM into an isomeric EM, and therefore a FIEM contains all EMs which are chemically interconvertible, as far as stoichiometry is concerned. In summary, a FIEM(A) contains, at least in principle, the whole chemistry of the collection A of atoms and since any collection of atoms may be chosen here, Ugi concludes that a theory of FIEM is, in fact, a theory of all chemistry. [Pg.433]

The alcohols form one of the most important of the Emilies of oi ganio compounds. The simplest member of this family is methylic alcohol, which is derived fiem marsh-gas by the sub stitution of one atom of hydroxyl for one of hydrogen. [Pg.243]

An extension of isomerism from molecules to ensembles of molecules (EM) leads to new perspectives in chemistry. The left and right hand sides of a stoichiometrically balanced reaction equation are isomeric EM. Any chemical reaction may be regarded as an isomerization, i.e. the conversion of an EM into an isomeric EM. Let A = A1(... A be a finite collection of atoms with the empirical formula A. Any EM that contains each atom of A exactly once is an EM (A). The family of all isomeric EM (A), the FIEM(A) contains the complete chemistry ofA = At,... A . The FIEM(A) is closed and finite. It has well-defined limitations and invariancies. Accordingly, the logical structure of the chemistry of an FIEM(A) is much easier to elucidate than the logical structure of chemistry without the above restrictions [9],... [Pg.203]

The chemistry of an FIEM(A) of a finite collection of atoms is a finite closed system with a variety of well-defined properties. Thus its logical structure is easier to analyze than the logical structure of chemistry in general. Since any collection of atoms may serve as A, any qualitative relations that exist in an FIEM(A) are analogously also valid for chemistry as a whole [9]. [Pg.205]

Thus, the investigation of the constitutional aspect of the chemistry of an FIEM(A) provides us with knowledge about the constitutional aspect of the logical structure of chemistry. [Pg.205]

A geometric interpretation follows from mapping the n x n fee-matrices B onto points P(B) in an n2-dimensional euclidean space. There D(B, E) is the Lt-distance, the city block -or taxi driver -distance, between P(B) and P(E). Thus an FIEM(A) corresponds to a lattice of points in an n2-dimensional euclidean space. The reaction matrices correspond to vectors between the fee-points [9,19,33]. [Pg.206]

In the chemical applications of this model the problem and its solutions are imbedded into a suitable FIEM. For instance, in bilateral synthesis design the EMb(A) of the starting materials and the target EMe(A), i.e. the target molecule and its coproducts, correspond to the fee-points P(B) and P(E), and the pathways that connect P(B) with P(E) via the fee-points of intermediate EMs are the conceivable syntheses. The solutions of such chemical problems are found by solving the fundamental equation... [Pg.206]

Any EM is a representative of its FIEM the simplest is the EM (A) of free atoms. Hence, the representation of an FIEM is accomplished by first defining a reference ensemble and then gradually generating the list of atoms belonging to that FIEM. [Pg.223]

In order to select a specific EM from the FIEM, the set of bonds that determines this EM, must be created. [Pg.224]

The bond-to-bond reanangement is faster than C-C insertion and because of the energy released it breaks apart into CH4 and 2115. Depending on the temperature, it can take more or less time. This dynamical behavior is conceptually interesting, since it means that C-C protonation cannot be taking place directly, once it becomes sterically demanding. Actually, die products that come fiem C-C protonation could be due to the protonation of the primary C-H bonds, which after rearrangement to the C-proponium, affords its dissociation products. [Pg.310]
