There are various major fields of application for chemical sensors environmental studies, quality control of chemically produced compounds and processed food and biomedical analysis, especially for medical diagnostics. In the field of environmental analysis there is a great demand for the type of continuous monitoring that only a sensor can provide, since the relevant parameter for toxicological risk assessment is always the dose (i.e., a concentration multiplied by an exposure lime). The study of environmental chemistry also depends upon a continuous data output that provides not only baseline levels but also a reliable record of concentration outbursts. Data networks can be used to accumulate multiple determinations of a particular analyte regardless of whether these are acquired simultaneously or at different times within a three-dimensional sampling space (which may have dimensions on the order of miles).
