Fibrous Matter

Building mud, a composite material, is easily prepared by mixing clay or clayey soil with fibrous matter, such as straw or dung of herbivorous animals, and sufficient water to obtain a plastic, pliable mass. In ancient Egypt, for example, mud was made by mixing clayey soil with sand, chopped straw, and sufficient water so as to make the mixture pliable and suitable either for use as mortar or stucco or for making bricks. [Pg.170]

Solid Constituents of Wood.—Fibrous matter, water, sap, and mineral salts, are the proximate principles of wood of evory description. The amount of water containod in different woods has already received a share of attention, and as the sap is of a different... [Pg.39]

Th is BkPdr shall be of such fineness that 3%(max) is retained on a No 140 US Std sieve and 2%(max) retained on a No 200 sieve. Static burning time, when loaded in US Std Fuzes M54, M55A3, M77, M84 and M65A1, must be as indicated above under Rate of Bumingfitem) r). No gritty or fibrous matter shall be present... [Pg.171]

A final comparison of low temperature crazes with shear bands reveals that both deformation phenomena are related. The surface morphologies are quite similar because both modes of plastic deformation depend upon the relative displacement of domains of a size of 10 to 100 nm. However, crazing is controlled by a tensile stress and the fibrous matter contains voids. Shear banding, on the other hand, is controlled by a shear stress which encourages lateral movements without voiding. The final breakdown process may then be initiated in both cases by a random rupture at the upper or lower edge of the deformation zone (Fig. 39 a, b). [Pg.271]

Tallow The fat of animals like the ox and sheep, extracted from membranous and fibrous matter by melting. It is solid, white and almost tasteless when pure, and is used In soep, candles, oleomargarine, etc. [Pg.21]

This process applies to fibrous matters, and is largely practiced with a lever knife similar to that u d by tobacconists for cutting tol cco. This slicing renders the substance in better form for maceration, and, moreover, admits of readier desiccation, a necessary process when it is required to be further reduced under the pestle or by being grated on a coarse rasp. On a large scale, rotary cutters are in use, but they are far beyond the reach of tbe amateur. [Pg.375]

If a membrane-type filter made of cellulose acetate is used, it can be made transparent by the application of a clearing fluid, allowing the dust to be examined under a microscope and the particles or fibres counted if required. This is particularly important if fibrous matter such as asbestos is present. [Pg.443]

Another name for the albedo of citrus fruits, which is the white fibrous matter that lies between the fruit segments and the outer pigmented portion of the peel (flavedo). Citrus pith is rich in (1) bioflavonoids, and (2) pectin, a gelling agent and an ingredient in diarrhea remedies. [Pg.856]

One of the major problems with traditional gauzes is the difficulty in removing them upon healing of the wound. Fibrous matters from the dressing tend to mix with exudate and blood. When the wound heals and dries, the fibers often get... [Pg.102]
