These results, coupled with the recent findings of AFFIRM, question the need to use antiarrhythmic drugs to prevent recurrences of atrial fibrillation. Perhaps this practice should now be totally abandoned, allowing patients to remain in atrial fibrillation once recurrences happen with strategies only to control rate and prevent thromboembolism. While it is true that these data certainly have led to a less aggressive approach, patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and intolerable symptoms during recurrences do require antiarrhythmic drugs to prevent attacks. [Pg.335]
