Tannins have profound inhibitory effects on the fibrolytic bacterial populations in the rumen at high doses depending upon the type of tannins, thus reducing the fiber digestion and decreases fiber digestibility. The presence of Calliandra tannins in the... [Pg.248]

Lipids present in the diet may become rancid. When fed at high (>4-6%) levels, Hpids may decrease diet acceptabiUty, increase handling problems, result in poor pellet quaUty, cause diarrhea, reduce feed intake, and decrease fiber digestion in the mmen (5). To alleviate the fiber digestion problem, calcium soaps or prilled free fatty acids have been developed to escape mminal fermentation. These fatty acids then are available for absorption from the small intestine (5). Feeding whole oilseeds also has alleviated some of the problems caused by feeding Hpids. A detailed discussion of Hpid metaboHsm by mminants can be found (16). [Pg.156]

Wood Residuals. Chips, sawdust, and other residuals such as planar shavings are used as a primary source of fiber for some pulp mills. Chips are screened and placed in a purchased chip pile. Sawdust and other residuals obtained from wood processing plants must be cooked separately and requite special digesters and handling equipment. These materials may also be burned as hog fuel. [Pg.256]

Nitrocellulose is always in motion in the digester and well suspended in water, so that each fiber receives uniform treatment, producing a uniform viscosity much superior to the batch product. The continuous product has no oppor-... [Pg.780]

Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the hypocholesterolemic effect of GA (Annison et al., 1995 Tiss et al., 2001). Some studies have suggested that the viscosity of fermentable dietary fiber contributes substantially to the reduction of lipids in animals and humans (Gallaher et al., 1993 Moundras et al., 1994). However, other studies suggested that this property is not related to plasma lipids (Evans et al., 1992). The mechanism involved is clearly linked to increased bile acid excretion and fecal neutral sterol or a modification of digestion and absorption of lipids (Moundras et al., 1994). [Pg.9]

Early refeeding as tolerated is recommended. Age-appropriate diet may be resumed as soon as dehydration is corrected. Early initiation of feeding shortens the course of diarrhea. Initially, easily digested foods, such as bananas, applesauce, and cereal, may be added as tolerated. Foods high in fiber, sodium, and sugar should be avoided. [Pg.439]

Ganji, V., and Kies, C. V. (1994). Psyllium husk fiber supplementation to soybean and coconut oil diets of humans Effect on fat digestibility and faecal fatty acid excretion. Eur. J. Clin. Nutr. 48, 595-597. [Pg.216]

Zig-zag fiber morphology persists at later stages of digestion and is attributed to retention of the globular domain of LH in fiber The three-dimensional organization of nucleosomes in extended (low ionic strength) chromatin fibers requires the globular domain of LHs and either the tails of LH or the N-terminal tails of H3... [Pg.373]

The second largest use of sodium bicarbonate, accounting for approximately 25% of total production, is as an agricultural feed supplement. In cattle it helps maintain rumen pH and aids fiber digestibility for poultry it helps maintain electrolyte balance by providing sodium in the diet, helps fowl tolerate heat, and improves eggshell quality. [Pg.248]

Most aspects t>f carbohydrate nutrition are simpler than those of other nutrients, (For example, fat nutrition is complicated by the fact that the metabolism of fats requires bile salts to maintain solubility during digestion and lipoproteins and albumin during distribution in the body.) On the other hand, the nutrition of the carbohydrates that take the form of dietary fibers is very complicated. This complexity . > due to the fact that they arc metabolized by enzymes of the gut microflora. [Pg.116]
