Figure 4. Scanning (a) and transmission (b and c) electron micrographs of the penetration of pea stem cuticle by germinating spores of F. solani f. sp. pisi. Figures represent the state of events 12 h after placing spores on the stem of the pea seedling. The infection area was treated with ferritin-conjugated, anticutinase IgG. Ferritin granules can be seen at the site of penetration in b and c. C, cuticle CW, cell wall F, fungus. Figure 4. Evidence for involvement of cutinase in fungal penetration To determine whether fungal pathogens secrete cutinase during the penetration into their hosts, ferritin conjugated antibodies prepared against cutinase and electron microscopy were used. By this method, it was shown that F. solani pisi secreted cutinase during penetration into pea hypocotyl wTth intact cuticular barrier (8). This infection could be completely prevented by specific inhibition of cutinase either with chemicals or antibodies (9). [Pg.474]
