Feelings about time

We feel it is about time that we quote the wondrous aphorism things are counterintuitive only when you have intuition (Deborah Van Vechten, personal communication). 

I was on oxygen for the first year here, and I had to wear a mask at times. I was worried about the kids and how they d feel about Mom being on oxygen. But it wasn t like I was dying. I was still going to work and making dinner, so it wasn t that big of a deal to them. 

Once you begin the essay writing stage, your journal will become an invaluable tool. It can help you use the right tone, neither too casual nor too formal, so that your essay sounds like you. While rereading it, make note of the words you use, and what your voice sounds like when you write. Also make note of the ideas and topics that hold your interest. Sometimes you may not be aware of your feelings about something until you take the time to explore them. Use your journal entries to search for possible essay material. 

Assignment Describe a time when you and a family member experienced a deep sense of conflict or when you sharply disagreed about an important issue. What caused the conflict What was the outcome Have your feelings about the matter changed or remained the same Explain. 

For example, you might believe that Americans today work more hours and have less leisure time than at any other time in our history. There are probably statistics out there to support this assertion, but after a quick search on the Internet, you find nothing. Unless you re willing to put in more research time to find what you need, as strongly as you may feel about the idea, since you can t support it, you shouldn t include it. 

For an hour and a half, I got a kind of break. I could still feel pain, but the torpedo coming out of my rear end pulled backjust a little. At least I didn t have to scream. When the medicine ran out, it was about time to push. I had pictured myself squatting while I pushed, but I was too worn out to move out of my bed. Instead, I stayed on my side and held a leg in the air. This wasn t how my labor was supposed to go. But fifty minutes later, a beautiful little girl was in my arms. And it didn t matter how it was supposed to go. 

Let me now go to what we spent the majority of our time discussing the hostile environment in academia and other issues. There are mixed feelings about how hostile the environment is in academia. There are some very positive situations in academia, but many others are negative. 

In some ways, I envy Nicole. She gets to sleep in in the mornings and never has to deal with riding the bus, which I hate doing. She gets a lot of time to read whatever she wants. That would be nice. On the other hand, she spends a lot of time with her mother and her two brothers and I am not sure how I would feel about that because I think I would get tired of that. 

This is about time management. We have two days to finish this. Step 5 Andy thinks that because Mike talked about some unresolved personal problems, maybe he is feeling insignificant or out of control. If Andy and Brant make Mike feel as if the work he does is crucial to the project s success (which it is), then Mike will be up to the task of doing his work. 

It may be particularly hard for you to bring up information and feelings about repressed material, even if you are practicing the systematic type of self-observation that will be discussed in Chapter 17. By definition, there is a powerful reason why the material is being blocked from consciousness, and the desire to know yourself through self-observation may not be sufficient to overcome this block. You may become sensitive to peculiar reactions at times, the indirect effects of repression, like our patient s angry tone of voice that was so much at variance with his statement that he loved his mother but it may take outside intervention, from a therapist or teacher, to help you uncover repressed material.
