The suitability of a modified-release formulation of carbamazepine (Carbatrol) for administration through feeding tubes in six children has been assessed (80). Carbatrol was administered as follows first, the tube was flushed with 10 ml of water, then the granular contents of a capsule of Carbatrol were added to 15 ml of water and administered via the tube this was followed by an additional flush with 10 ml of water. Two of the six children had to be withdrawn from the study because of frequent tube occlusions, attributed to the Carbatrol granules. [Pg.633]

There is little benefit in using a tube larger than 12 Fr if the device is conscientiously flushed after every use and liquid medicine preparations are used instead of crushed tablets. A growing number of drugs are specifically manufactured for use through feeding tubes. [Pg.210]

Enteral feed reduces phenytoin absorption by 75%. The pharmacist can recommend the phenytoin to be given as a single dose, if possible. The enteral feeds should be stopped 2 hours prior to and for 2 hours after the dose. The NG tube should be flushed with 20-50 mL of sterile water before feeds and medication. Phenytoin levels must be monitored as this drug has a narrow therapeutic index. [Pg.241]

Across a service road, conical mills blend feed for beef cattle, fattening in multilevel pens that conserve ground space. Tubes carry the feed to be mechanically distributed. A central elevator transports the cattle up and down, while a tubular side drain flushes wastes to be broken down for fertilizer. Beside the farther pen, a processing plant packs beef into cylinders for shipment to market by helicopter and mono-rail. Illuminated plastic domes provide controlled environments for growing high-value crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, and celery. Near a distant lake and recreation area, a pumping station supplies water for the vast operation."... [Pg.272]
