Feed-forward control Subject

Feed-forward control takes quick action on any disturbance while feedback ensures that any persisting or increasing offset in the level is taken care of. Feed-forward control is often used in case of slow changing processes where the state variable reacts slowly on a distiubance. This happens, for example, in distillation columns with many trays, which are subject to large disturbances (for example feed changes from furnaces). Most process units, however, can be well controlled by using feedback control only. [Pg.443]

Thus, they concluded that ATP-sulfurylase was subject to feed-forward stimulation by a reaction product of nitrate reduction and that nitrate reductase was subject to an analogous feed forward by a product of sulfate, thus coordinating the first step of each of the two pathways. Some support for this mechanism has come fi om experiments with cell cultures of Ipomea (Zink, 1984) and from measurements of ATP-sulfurylase and nitrate reductase in the leaves of whole tobacco plants (Barney and Bush, 1985), though in the latter study the response of ATP-sulfurylase to nitrogen stress was far less pronounced than the response of nitrate reductase to sulfur stress. However, as discussed below, APS sulfo-transferase rather than ATP-sulfurylase appears to be the principal determining site for the feed-forward control of sulfate assimilation by nitrogen assimilation products in Lemna. [Pg.345]

If feed rate and composition are invariant, there seems to be no purpose for a forward loop. Although feed rate to a column may be on flow control, this does not mean that it is invariant-it means that the stream is only subject to intentional disturbances. Supply of feed stock must come from somewhere, and its source cannot, have infinite capacity. The smaller the supply capacity, the more often feed rate will have to be adjusted. And whether feed rate is subject to random variations or intentional set-point adjustments, it can change rapidly-far more rapidly than a feedback loop on product quality can respond. [Pg.317]
